By the time of the campaign in Western Europe, it equipped the Royal Artillery anti-tank regiments. The 17-pdr was the most formidable anti-tank gun deployed by the western Allies, and was capable of penetrating more than 200mm of armour at short range using armour-piercing discarding sabot (APDS) shot.
